hauer - auer - awer

The Hauer family came to the glassworks shortly after its creation.

They all seem to descend from Jean HAUWER and his wife Dorothé REBISCHON.

We know that in a deed made in October 1704, Jean AUWER from Oberbruck bought from Michel SCHMITT, a master glassmaker and founder of Wildenstein his share consisting of two workshops and a house, for which he took out a mortgage for six years.

The continuance of the family name was due to their glassmaker sons, Joseph and Jean HAUWER.

The first son, Joseph, was implicated in a disturbance on August 1709. Towards 9 p.m., on the high road near Bitschwiller, the fight took place between Joseph HAUWER from Wildenstein and Ours BURTSCHI from Liegsdorf against Othman NICKLER, a tilemaker from Bitschwiller.

Blood flowed, and a report was made by the surgeons at Thann.
